Description

The SSTO Z-3 Commuter Mk.1 was created for the Smallest SSTO with orange tank payload challenge at Master level.

It can:

  1. Lift an Orange tank to 80 km circular equatorial orbit.
  2. Leave the tank in orbit and land back at KSC.
  3. Take-off again and get back in orbit without refueling.
  4. Rendezvous and pickup the Orange tank again and land back at KSC again.

All this without using the fuel in the Orange tank.

It’s based on the SSTO Z-2 High-Five.

Ascent Profile - with Orange tank

  1. Full throttle, Stage and take-off using full runway length.
  2. Hold 5° above horizon until speed reaches 600 m/s.
  3. Pitch up gently to 8° above horizon, without losing speed.
  4. At 22 km switch RAPIER Mode (Action Group 1)
  5. Keep going at 8° above horizon.
  6. At 30 km point the nose Prograde.
  7. Throttle down when AP is a couple km above your desired altitude.
  8. Circularize at AP.

Ascent Profile - empty

  1. Full throttle, Stage and take-off using full runway length.
  2. Hold 45° above horizon until 8-9 km altitude.
  3. Pitch down rapidly to reach 10° above horizon at 10-11 km.
  4. At 24 km switch RAPIER Mode (Action Group 1)
  5. Keep going at 10° above horizon.
  6. At 30 km point the nose Prograde.
  7. Throttle down when AP is a couple km above your desired altitude.
  8. Circularize at AP.

Descent Profile

  1. 80 km orbit. In Map mode, focus Kerbin and turn camera so KSC is facing towards you right above the Navball.
  2. Time warp until your spaceplane is right behind Kerbin.
  3. Put a maneuver node right where you orbit appears from behind Kerbin on the left side.
  4. Pull the retrograde handle until the maneuver is ~100 m/s dV.
  5. Move the maneuver node until the planned orbit intersects the surface through KSC.
  6. Pull the prograde handle until the maneuver is ~70 m/s dV.
  7. Perform the maneuver.
  8. Turn Prograde and time warp till you enter atmosphere.
  9. Keep nose 45° above horizon until your speed is around 1200 m/s. (May need to move fuel around to keep stable)
  10. You should be nearing the coast of the landmass where KSC is at 25-30 km altitude.
  11. Nose down 5°-10° below horizon and aim to pass the mountains at 10 km, at 650-750 m/s.
  12. Nose down further, if needed, and aim for a point about half the runway length in front of the runway.
  13. At 200 m, flare and aim for the runway.
  14. Touch down with less than 3 m/s vertical speed.
