Description

Spinner M2 is a stock electric propeller craft. It is a development of my previous plane, Spinner 566. Top speed is 705m/s (Mach 2.1).

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.4.3.

To fly:

a. Press alt-E until roll trim is maxed then hit 1 to start props
b. Hit space to start takeoff roll
c. Once airborne, hit space again to jettison wheels
d. Climb to 6000m, level off, then shallow dive to 4000m or 475m/s whichever comes first.
e. Switch to props, on each prop select blades and reduce authority limiter from 120 to 80.
f. Maintain pitch of at least 0.1 degrees and Spinner will accelerate to Mach 2.1. Be patient, it takes time.

NOTE:
I highly recommend using Mechjeb SMARTASS for best results controlling this thing.

Making Spinner required extensive testing over many hours. It is important to acknowledge that this craft exploits several loopholes in parts physics and the aerodynamic model in KSP. For example:

  • The way fairings and autostruts are implemented in the game make it possible to create an unrealistically lightweight and rigid structure, capable of holding a heavily clipped 22 ton reaction wheel bearing engine in place (most of the time).

  • Real life reaction wheels are not capable of powering a propeller, let alone a supersonic one. Let’s pretend that Spinner is powered by a futuristic electric motor (maybe made by Tesla).

  • Radioisotope thermoelectric generators cannot possibly generate the current necessary to feed powerful machinery such as supersonic electric propellers or turbines. Let’s pretend Spinner is powered by a little nuclear reactor.

  • Propeller blades which appear to be connected by magnets and float around the aircraft do not exist. Let’s pretend that Kerbals have developed extremely powerful superconductor technology.

Please feel free to modify this craft. If you can improve its performance, please let me know!
