After a failed attempt to strap fireworks into a lawn chair, Kerbal engineers realized that they can improve the safety of their test pilots in atmospheric flights.
Although the ejection speed is slow, it was considered successful, as most of the vehicles tested never manage to takeoff. Nevertheless it is regarded as a better alternative than hoping for the best.

The entire module is fitted in a 2,5m fairing, able to be fitted in medium to large size aircraft.
