Description

Short-distance surface-to-surface transport vehicle designed to be used in and around Duna colonies. Commissioned for the Mars Exploration & Simulations Act of 2021 (SpaceLab community challenge).

  • Carries up to 6 Kerbals (one of which must be a pilot), as well as some light cargo (in the cargo unit beneath the seats).
  • The vehicle can be refueled as shown in the images above, using the refueling rover included as a secondary payload.
  • 250 m/s delta-V at Duna sea level, sufficient for at least one round trip between nearby colonies.
  • In case of engine failure, an emergency parachute unit is housed in the hemispherical compartment above the hatch. It can be deployed through staging, or with the Abort action group. The parachutes are sufficient to land the craft once without severe damage.
  • Russell has no antenna for full autonomous control, but partial control is sufficient for landing in a rough area by holding retrograde and using Z/X engine controls. The same is true for the rover, which must have its antenna retracted during reentry.
  • See action groups, also note that translation controls (H/N, J/L, I/K) control the piston and joints of the refueling arm.

This vehicle is named after the Right Honorable Bertrand Russell, OM, FRS, a British mathematician, philosopher, and statesman, The 3rd Earl Russell. One of his many contributions to philosophy is a thought experiment now known as Russell’s Teapot.

(It’s a teapot, get it, Bri'ish people, tea, bottom text, haha funne?)
