Context
After flags and footprints were placed by American astronauts on the Moon, it was clear that the space race was gradually drawing to a close. Unlike the 1960’s, a decade of fierce competiton from both sides, the 1970’s proved to begin the era of international co-operation and unity. The Apollo Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) was an important milestone in achieving this. First, a Soyuz spacecraft would be placed into LEO with 2 crew members followed by a Saturn 1B Apollo spacecraft launching a few hours later to meet up with the Soyuz and dock. Since the Soyuz had a different docking mechanism to Apollo, a docking adapter was created that would sit under the Apollo spacecraft, the same place the lunar module was a few years ago, on the S-IVB. After 3 years of co-operation, the spacecraft were launched almost simultaneously on July 15th 1975 with the Soyuz launching first as planned. On July 17th, the spacecraft successfully docked together forming the first multinational structure in LEO.
