Magellan was an American built spacecraft that was sent to map the surface of Venus using instruments that could pry beneath the thick cloud canopy. It was launched on the 4th of May 1989 on STS-30 (Space Shuttle Atlantis) and arrived at Venus on August 10th 1990. After over 4 years of mapping the surface, Magellan lost contact as it broke up in the Venusian atmosphere as planned.
