Description
No, this is NOT some sort of starfighter! The SNECMA Coléoptère was an experimental tail-sitting aircraft, envisioned as a point defence fighter which could launch from anywhere. A prototype was made, but it was destroyed in testing, and the French government refused to fund it any further.
This craft has a pretty good top speed, of around 500 m/s, but as you can imagine by the design of this, cargo planes are slightly more manoeuvrable than this. For control, there are reaction wheels and RCS, like on the real craft, but forget about landing - I’ve tried many times and it really doesn’t want to land when you’ve passed a certain altitude. You can hop up and down, if you really want, but after flying, I think that it is simply best if the pilot bails out to get back down…
Flight Instructions
… are easier than you might think! Just turn on SAS, activate the engine, and start turning soon after you’ve taken off.
There is a really good video about this by Mustard, for those who are curious
