Description
Here is my detailed Space Launch System 1B. The is designed to be the true next generation launch system for NASA. Unlike the somewhat limited block 1, the 1B will be capable of transporting both crew and cargo to the Moon. It has a payload of 105 tons to LEO and 37 tons on a TLI. This allows for it to send both the Orion spacecraft and logistic pods to the Gateway as part of the Artemis program. It’s first flight is expected on Artemis 4 in 2025.
The difference between the block 1 and 1B is the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS). This is a true upper stage and is capable of transporting heavy payloads to the Moon. The EUS was chosen over the Earth Departure Stage (EDS) due to it relying more on existing technology and the EDS being too over powered for near Earth asteroid missions and Lunar missions. The EDS is still technically in development at NASA with most work being stopped until the late 2020s most likely.
The vehicle carries the Orion MPCV which can carry crews of 4 (7 in an emergency) to and from the Moon. The vehicle will be capable of long duration free flight as well as even longer tended flight (attached to another vehicle). So far it has flown once on EFT-1 but that used a Delta IV Heavy, not the SLS. The Orion has a logistics module that it can attach to and guide towards the Gateway after TLI.
Just like my Super Detailed Saturn V, this vehicle is as accurate as possible to the real thing. I tried my best to get TWR and burn time correct as well as making capable of flying an accurate flight plan. It is definitely overpowered for KSP but not too much.
Just as much thought was put into the Orion as was the SLS. It has accurate d/v numbers. It does have inaccurate RCS pods because stock-alike ones look terrible.
Controls:
1- toggle solar panels
9- jettison launch abort system
Development time was about an hour but this is the culmination of several previous attempts.
A stock rocket called Detailed SLS Block 1B + Orion and Logistics. Built with 141 of the finest parts, its root part is fairingSize3.
