Description
Thought I was done with the Block 2? Think again. I’m doing every Space Launch System ever designed by NASA and I still have 3 more to get through.
The Block 0, also known as the 4/3 configuration, was designed very early on in the SLS program as a early test vehicle that could be launched in 2016 to test uncrewed and crewed Orion spacecraft in LEO. The vehicle is a lot more different than you’d think. The most obvious difference is it’s lack of a second stage but it also has a shortened core stage and only 3 engines, using the RS-25E of course. It was originally part of the core lineup of rockets which would include the Block 0 with 70 tons to LEO, Block 1 with 100 tons to LEO, Block 2 with 130 tons to LEO, and Block 3 with 150 tons to LEO. Obviously this was changed to be more affordable. The main reason Block 0 was passed up on was due to the core stage needing separate tooling equipment which would add cost and development time. The uncrewed Orion test was than moved to a Delta IV Heavy.
The vehicle carries the Orion MPCV which can carry crews of 4 (7 in an emergency) to and from the Moon. The vehicle will be capable of long duration free flight as well as even longer tended flight (attached to another vehicle). So far it has flown once on EFT-1 but that used a Delta IV Heavy, not the SLS. The Orion has a logistics module that it can attach to and guide towards the Gateway after TLI.
Just like my Super Detailed Saturn V, this vehicle is as accurate as possible but detailed
is used very loosely since a lot of information is missing since it got cancelled so early on in development.
Just as much thought was put into the Orion as was the SLS. It has accurate d/v numbers. It does have inaccurate RCS pods because stock-alike ones look terrible.
1- toggle solar panels
9- jettison launch abort system
Development time was about an hour.
A stock rocket called Detailed SLS Block 0 + Orion MPCV. Built with 94 of the finest parts, its root part is Size3LargeTank.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.8.1.
