Description
Update 1.2->1.3: Updated to KSP 1.7.2, removed most struts and replaced with autostruting.
Update 1.1->1.2: Much stronger landing gear, better first stage engines, better ladders, better decouplers for landing gear. No more landing gear breaking or decoupled landing gear crashing back into the spacecraft
Update 1.0->1.1: Added piloted command pod, added lifting flaps for extra lift on take-off from Eve, strengthened wings, added radiators.
Can get as many as 17 Kerbals off Eve. Can take off from Kerbin to LKO, will need to refuel in Kerbin Orbit or Minmus Orbit by a fueling system of your own design. Once on Eve you will need to refuel it with a fueling system of your own design. Can get back to Eve orbit and there you will need an orbital spaceship to take the passengers back to kerbin.
From Kerbin Surface to Eve Orbit
- Check that all lift flaps are pointed down.
- Activate inter-stage cross-feed
- Run off the runway at full power and gently pitch up. Retract lifting flaps, cruise up to orbit.
- Refuel (somehow) with second stage tanks full and first stage core fuel tanks full (outer fuel tanks empty)
- Fly to Eve
- Use engines to enter a highly elliptical orbit about Eve.
- Aerobrake to a low circular eve orbit, ideally ~110 km.
From Eve Orbit to Eve Surface
- Set up a periapsis above your landing site of 45~70 km altitude. Make sure second stage still has 100%~50% fuel in it and first stage is empty.
- Enter atmosphere at 60°~70° pitch up, maintain pitch by transferring fuel from bow fuel tanks in second stage to stern fuel tank in first stage. Things will get hot but nothing should explode.
- Once below 1200 m/s surface velocity, begin pitching down and glide to landing target. Extend landing gear and lock brakes when speeds are below 150 m/s and less than 1 km above ground. Maintain speed above 50 m/s and have level pitch when hitting the ground.
Eve Surface to Eve Orbit
- Make sure you have good smooth ground ahead, if it goes off a cliff even better.
- Make sure fuel transfer from second stage to first is off.
- Get a good running start and take off above 100 m/s with lifting flaps down. Pitch up slowly. retract landing gear, retract lifting flaps and decouple landing gear.
- Slowly pitch up to 80°~60° after thrust exceeds Eve gravity.
- Once first stage is empty decouple it and keep going to orbit with second stage, should have >500 m/s of delta-v left even from near sea level take off.
A stock aircraft called Eve Return 1.3. Built with 131 of the finest parts, its root part is Size3SmallTank. Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.7.2.
