- KSP: 1.12.4
Description
Version 1.8: Tested and validated in KSP 1.12.4, replaced Eve Flying Rover with Eve Flyer, Eve flyer is faster and landing gear is tougher then wheels.
This is an all-in-one craft that can take 7 Kerbals to the surface of Eve, explore the whole surface if desired, and return them back to Kerbin. Comes with:
- Booster capable of >400 ton to Low Kerbin Orbit.
- Has emergency escape abort mode if launch goes wrong.
- Eve Transfer Stage: Capable of getting the base to Eve orbit, remaining in orbit as a relay, and docking with the command pod and returning it to kerbin, comes with heat shield for the command pod to use for kerbin retry. Comes with drop-off tanks, you will need to use them to get to Eve.
- Comes with fairing for surviving aerobraking and entry into Eve atmosphere, use heat shields as a drag skirt to maintain passive pro-grade stability.
- Eve Direct Base: comes with science habitat, mining equipment and fuel manufacturing for producing enough fuel for returning Kerbals to Eve Orbit.
- Comes with six counter-rotating 2.5 m fans for re-orientating to upward position and landing gently on Eve, as well as taking a fully fueled return rocket to 20 km altitude where it can make it to Eve Orbit with >500 m/s of DV to spare.
- Base Fans can be used to hover base and fly it around at <30 m/s to choose an exact site. Can fly with or without the EFR still attached.
- Enough science station parts for 10 science stations.
- Eve Flyer (EF): Can take 3 Kerbals all around eve, fly, rove via pusher propers, land and take off from sea, and collect science. cruises at ~14 km altitude 120 m/s, with 2° pitch and -63° blade pitch. Take off from sea with via wing pitching with abort button.
Extra Controls
Translate U/D: Base Fan Deploy Angle
Translate F/B: Eve Flyer Fan Deploy Angle
Main Throttle: Fan Torque Limit
Mission Protocol
1.Take off vertical and pitch down to 80° when reaching 75 m/s vertical velocity, activate prograde SAS and let gravity turn from there. Stage Side booster when empty. Mechjeb accent profile of 40% to 80 km works just fine.
2.Once reaching an projected apogee of 80 km, turn off core stage, cruise until above atmosphere, eject inter-stage fairing. Enter orbit with core stage, stay in prograde and stage the core stage so it can de-orbit its self
3.Undergo a Hoffman transfer to Eve when a low velocity launch window opens. Remember to put craft in normal position to the sun after an operation so solar panels can always produce power. You will consume a drop-off tanks to do this, discard it the moment it is empty, make sure to retract solar panel before hand though.
4.At Eve use Eve Transfer Stage Engine to enter a very parabolic orbit about Eve with a periapsis of ~100 km and a apoapsis of >20 Mm.
5.Extend Heat Shield skirt, low periapsis to <90 km but >75 km, and aerobreak repeatedly until reaching an apoapsis of 100~200 km, circularize at apoapsis. You will likely consume the second drop-off tank by this time, discard it.
6.Lower periapsis to 20 km, detach Eve Transfer Stage and raise its apoapsis back above 90 km. Put Eve Direct in prograde orientation.
7.Hit atmosphere in prograde orientation and decelerate to <300 m/s, then stage fairing and skirts.
8.Make sure fans are extended to ~60° blade pitch, turn on fuel cells, turn fans on, full throttle, and set to retrograde orientation, craft will self-right. You should fall down at 90~30 m/s.
9.When reaching 100 m altitude above surface retract fan blade deployment (or set pitch to 0°) and fans at full throttle, fall rate should be <2 m/s, this should allow a safe landing, turn off fans after landing. If needed you can hover and pitch over and fly about safely at up to 30 m/s to find a flat landing spot.
10.Extend radiators, solar panels, stage the EF strut and it should fall flat naturally once hinge is set to max. Put a kerbal in the EF and stage it off, Lock the arm the EF was attached to. You can use the EF grappler to re-attach it. Activate pitch, yaw and roll control for EF flaps. Activate EF fans and adjust EF fan pitch to -70°~-80°. You can raise EF wheels by setting wheel springs and dampening to 1 and 0.5 respectively, but reduce these back to 0 when attaching to Eve Direct Base or else the Kraken may make you hurt.
11.Mine ore and convert to fuel and fill up craft. Stay on Eve until a low transfer launch window back to Kerbin opens.
12.Have deployment angle of the fans set to 5° pitch but do not extend them. Set orientation to command capsule, set fans to full power. Stage the Eve Direct base and extend blade deployment simultaneous and the craft should take off at up to >5 m/s Use SAS stability to maintain upward position. Once far above the base raise pitch to 15° to raise up at up to 60 m/s.
13.Once exceeding 20 km sea level altitude when vertical speed will fall to zero and you will begin falling, start the rocket engines, retract blade deployment and detach the fans. Go vertical to 100 m/s and pitch to 80°, enter prograde gravity turn, detach lower stage when its tanks are empty and cruise to >100 km apogee before circularizing.
14.Rendezvous with the Eve Transfer Stage. Detach the 2nd stand before or after docking. Burn to Kerbin intercept.
15.Intercept Kerbin to a periapsis of <30 km, have the Eve Transfer Stage burn up, but have the capsule separate and inflate the heat shield, should remain stable prograde at up to 5 km/s re-entry velocities. Deploy chutes below 300 m/s and land on the inflatable heatshield.
A stock rocket called Eve Direct 1.8. Built with 596 of the finest parts, its root part is crewCabin. Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.12.4.
