The Plane

The Antonov A-40 was Oleg Antonovs concept plane supposed to drop tanks with their crew already in at the front lines. In the summer of 1942 the engineers working on a first prototype had fixed wings to a T-60 tank and the glider was ready for first test flights. Different sources describe different amounts of test flights, with some describing one failed flight, others one successful and some describing multiple test flights. It is also reported that the bomber towing the tank struggled to stay in the air and had to drop the tank early to not crash. Due to a change in war targets and because there were no sufficiently powerful tow planes the project was abandoned in september of 1942.

My Interpretation of the Design

The tank itself of course doesn’t shoot and the turret doesn’t turn either. It has only three wheels and there is no tank steering. For the flying part of the vehicle there are a lot of weird things that happened whilst i tried flying this. Yaw does not work at all and i just don’t know why. Roll will not work in your favor at all either. Sometimes roll does not work at all, sometimes it does and other times it just goes into the opposite direction of what you are expecting. All of that makes putting engines on this and actually dropping this in air like my other gliders very very hard. But at least the driving works!

Have fun trying to slap engines on this and then have fun struggling to fly!
