The D-model ‘Bullfrog’ shared the crew ascent vehicle of the LV-3A, added an ascent booster, and mounted the assembly to a descent stage designed for landings to the Duna surface. While the LV-3D lacks any scientific equipment itself, it features a large cargo deck for mounting rovers or other equipment to support an expedition to Duna. A large-diamter inflatable heatshield is utilized to provide protection and deceleration during Duna atmospheric entry. The ‘Titan 3M’ rocket was selected as the primary launcher of the LV-3D to transport the lander and stowed heatshield to Munar orbit, where it is mounted to a Duna interplanetary transfer spacecraft.
