Shortly after the first Mun landing, Rockomax and Jeb’s Junkyard & Spacecraft Parts Co. conducted a joint study on an interplanetary mission to Duna. The effort was formed after fears Kerbodyne was achieving a monopoly with their S3-series rocket components. The Integrated Kerbal Interplanetary Spacecraft (IKIS) design document called for an orbitally-assembled, NTR-powered rocket with a specialized aerodynamic capsule for landing on Duna’s surface. Not surprisingly, the EV-3 contained not one component manufactured by Kerbodyne, and instead relied on hardware supplied by Rockomax and Jeb’s Junkyard.

The ‘Clipper’ was extremely efficient, with enough delta-V to return the 3-kerbalnaut crew to Kerbin without waiting for a return transfer window. Utilizing a tiered assembly of so-called Nuclear Shuttles, the EV-3 could in theory be adapted to other missions in the Kerbol system.
