Like the C7 140, the 170 model was designed for high performance. However, the ‘Firebird’s airframe was specifically designed for stable, high-speed flight at high altitudes for gathering atmospheric data anywhere around Kerbin. The 170 also featured modular engine mounts, allowing ground crews to easily configure the aircraft with R.A.P.I.E.R. combined-cycle engines and oxidizer tanks for atmospheric tests well into the upper mesosphere.
