Description

A stock aircraft called Folding Helicopter. Built with 65 of the finest parts, its root part is Panel1.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.9.0.

Updated for the 1.9.

Folding helicopter is a light helicopter that can carry 2 kerbals and it’s equipped with all science experiments.

With it’s 2 main rotors folded down it can fit inside of the Mk3 cargo bay or any fairing bigger than ~3m. This allows you to easily transport the heli to a needed location.

If you plan to use this in a campaign and you don’t have the RTG’s unlocked, you can replace them with a few small solar panels or a single fuel cell, helicopter only needs little more than one unit of electric charge per second in order to run.

Thanks to its unique control scheme helicopter is highly maneuverable and relatively easy to fly, it can perform roll and loops and even fly upside down. Maximum speed is about 40 m/s in level flight.

Here is a link to a video showing the helicopter in action https://v.redd.it/s5d14ng8pst31

Instructions:

To unfold the rotors:
- press 1 to toggle the rotor hinges,
- after the hinges unfold and stop moving press 3 to lock the hinges.

To fold the rotors:
- set the throttle to 0 then engage the brakes to stop the rotors, try to get the blades aligned with the longitudinal axis of the helicopter, it doesn’t have to be perfect just close enough,
- press 3 to unlock rotor hinges,
- press 1 to fold the rotors.

Flying:
Before takeoff right click one of the blades on the main rotor and pin it, this will give you visual indicator for the blade pitch angle. Helicopter will hover at blade angle ~2.3-2.4 degrees.

To start the helicopter just set the throttle to 50% and wait for a few seconds for the rotors to get to full speed. Throttle will control the engines and blade pitch on the main rotors. Throttle at 50% will set the blades to neutral pitch, above 50% blades will have positive angle, below 50% negative angle.
