History

After the unveiling of the R-51 Warby, the Skoviet’s were scrambling to make their own home-grown helicopter. Kiralov Aviation was formed very quickly after the R-51’s launch, and was determined not only to create a domestic helicopter project, but to surpass the Warby in every way. Out came the Ra-90, a compact, twin rotor helicopter, capable of ferrying personnel and light cargo over moderate distances; its draw was in its vertical liftoff capability. This is of course a massive feat on behalf of the Skoviet Republic of Erpa, considering that less than 2 years ago, the engineering to create a helicopter did not even exist in the SRE.

How did they do it? The twin rotor design was pioneered in the SRE, not out of luxury, but out of necessity. Erpan engineers had trouble designing a tail rotor system that would stabilize the torque generated by the main blade. Their solution? Use two contra-rotating propellers.

The Kiralov Ra-90 would find respectable service in the ranks of the Air Force and Navy of the SRE. Due to isolationist policy, it would not receive the same distribution as that of the R-51 Warby. However, among pilots who had the pleasure to fly the Kiralov, it was a pleasant thing to fly, if not a little hungry on the jet-fuel. The contra-rotating propellers’ stabilizing properties also made it a boon for operations to and from Skoviet warships.

Instructions

Flying the thing in KSP is really easy; it is said that they even recruited Erpan truck drivers to pilot these things! Stage [spacebar] to engage the motors, and press 2 to deploy the rotor blades, and off you go! Action group 3 [AG3] turns the engines on and off. The contra-rotating propellers are very forgiving, and you should have no problem flying this thing. It is certainly much easier to fly when compared to the Warby.
