The Four Wings of Sand Island
The plane violently rattled as if it was about to tear itself apart, as I endured the 5G turn the F-14A made to engage the enemy fighters. While I had been on many backseat adventures, this one was special - I was flying in the rear seat of Osea’s most famed and successful ace squadron of the Circum-Pacific war - The Four Wings of Sand Island. As we turned to engage the fighters overhead Yuktobania, I heard the roar of the jet engine, as we plummeted into the sky. Though it was dark and overcast beneath the clouds, as we rose through the obfuscating cloud layer, I could see the faint shimmer of the clear blue sky. The difference was night and day. And just as we finally rose above those deep dark clouds, I was violently jolted back and to the left of my seat; inertia took its course as we engaged the Yuke fighter. I could see the pilot in front of me: She was fiddling with the knobs and switches, until I heard the familiar call of ‘Fox 2’. Only this time, it was spoken with such a soft voice you could almost laugh; but she was dead serious. I watched as I saw the missile take off into the deep blue yonder, leaving a trail of smoke behind, as it chased its target down like a rabid dog.
As it turned out, this time the missile connected, and we saw the Yuke pilot eject out of his Mirage fighter jet. One more to the already crowded list of kills made by the Four Wings of Sand Island. When we returned to the carrier, we conducted a debriefing , as we counted up the kills of all four squadron members. Though Kei Nagase, the pilot whom I was flying with, bagged one fighter jet today, her squad leader, Blaze, shot down 5 aircraft during this one sortie - that’s enough to make him ace already, with just this one mission! Though, I was lucky today, as I managed to capture a real air-to-air-combat kill with these Aces of Sand Island.
As I watched them take-off from the Carrier, I was briefly caught by an emotion of fear, as I wondered what would happen if these Aces were to be shot down over enemy territory, but it quickly turned to relief, as I saw their emblem shine in the glistening sun. I had to leave for the mainland before they could return, but as I took off into the skies in my own little plane, I knew Osea’s Aces would be safe…
