Description

The K-39 greaser was an efrosan pursuit fighter designed in 1937 under special contract issued directly to the dominion aircraft company to create a prototype aircraft with an emphasis on speed and low drag principles. The XK-39 first flew in 1940, featuring twin cowl mounted .50 caliber machine guns, with an additional four wing mounted .30 caliber guns behind a single four bladed propeller, managing cruise speeds approaching 320mph.

Impressed with the results, but disappointed by the aircraft itself, the air force once again tasked the modification bureau with improving it’s dog fighting capabilities.

The resulting aircraft was dubbed the K-39A. The first modification was to swap the .50 caliber guns for a pair of 25mm autocannons, modified to heighten their fire rate, while scrapping the outboard guns all together, opting instead for extra ammo that the autocannons demanded.

Lastly, the somewhat undersized engine of the prototype was replaced with the massive Raker V-2250 six pack, a V12 with cylinders arranged in clusters of two. This configuration allowed for more a survivable, lighter engine, as compared to other liquid cooled engines with solid blocks.

The engine, of course, didnt fit entirely. Special, more aerodynamic cylinder blocks were cast specifically for the K-39, due to the haste of their production, these blocks were prone to seeping oil, giving the K-39 the unceremonious blackened appearance of a greaser, thus, the name.

The K-39 would go on to serve throughout much of the early war, serving as a front line fighter in the western theater after the fall of the royal isles, fostering many ace pilots during it’s tenure. Technology doesnt stagnate though, and it soon found itself outgunned, out turned and overall, overwhelmed. The addition of wing mounted gunpods kept the aircraft viable for a further year or so, eventually being retired in 1946.
