Description

DesertFly is an RTG-powered stock Duna-capable rotorcraft drone using the DLC parts.

Flying it is only little challenging in Duna’s thin atmosphere. For flight, the OCTO probe core should be in Default. Landing is easy; put the OCTO in Forward, set SAS to Forward and the rotorcraft will go to a horizontal state, cancelling out any forward movement to allow you to touchdown as you slow the blades (Throttle controls the rotors, brakes will slow or halt rotors).

The extra blades easily allow a controllable touchdown. But power is at a premium. It can move close to 100 m/s under 2000m almost indefinitely if you angle the craft and forward speed just right. The perfect balance at lower altitudes (and thick air pressure) should allow almost constant flight. Do not gun DesertFly’s rotors–she will drain power very quickly. The lights aid in judging landing altitude if needed.

Requires 37m rocket to fit the rotorcraft (included). REQUIRES RELAY NETWORK unless you play with CommNet Disabled. RTGs required–you won’t gain sufficient sustaining solar power generation needed at Duna.

On Duna entry, keep to retrograde with heat shield ahead. Deploy chutes by 5000m, jettison heat shield and fairing plate, then (important) set SAS to stable-only to allow DesertFly to face nose down as you unlock the rotors (9), release the brake and use throttle to fly away as you decouple away from the chutes.

DesertFly, like the older MayFly, should fly ridiculously well at Eve. Should fly fairly well at Laythe, however, DesertFly’s range is tricky and she will not float.

A stock rocket called DesertFly. Built with 132 of the finest parts, its root part is ScienceBox.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.10.1.
