Steps to Operate
1 Stage to decouple propeller
2 AG0 to hold propeller with claw
3 Drive (or better vessel-mover mod) to water, entering <20m/s
4 Stage to decouple wheels
5 Recover 6 wheels
6 AG 1 and 2 for neutral bouyancy
7 AG 0 to separate propeller
8 ] switch to propeller, alt-E to rotate propeller
9 [ switch back to steer the sub

Action Groups
1 front ballast closed=neutral open=float
2 rear ballast closed=neutral open=float
3 toggle propeller torque
4 shallow prop pitch to get started
5 normal prop pitch
0 claw propeller — for safer quicksaves

Description

A stock submarine driven by electric propeller. Built with 78 of the finest parts in KSP version 1.3.1.

This is a smaller submarine in the style of Squiddy’s Humboldt, plus controllable ballast. With cargo bays closed the sub very slowly sinks; opening a bay causes KSP to include the volume of its contents toward buoyancy. They doors are set to open just 10%, to make the change visible but not be distracting.

KSP’s physics.cfg applies 30× drag to craft moving <0.4m/s in liquid, in what seems to be an attempt to model viscosity. This makes it difficult to get propeller-driven craft started. This craft can open ballast tanks to get upward motion, or temporarily use a fine-pitch on the prop. As this craft accelerates and drag transitions to its usual value, it tends to pitch up, which can be countered by closing the front bay, opening the rear.

Once moving, the craft cruises at 13 m/s, fast enough that you need to drive carefully.
