Prinz Eugen was launched on August 22nd, 1938, and commissioned on August 1st, 1940.
Her first operation outside of training was Operation Rheinübung, where she was escorted by German Z type destroyers until she reached the battleship Bismarck, where they decided to dash through the Denmark Strait. The ships sailed until they met some heavy cruisers and eventually met the battleships Prince of Wales and Hood, where the British ships mistook Prinz Eugen for Bismarck, biding time for Bismarck to fire upon (and destroy) Hood, though against the commanding officer’s orders.
Her next operation was the Channel Dash. She and the battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, with escorts rushed through the English Channel to north Germany, where Eugen was eventually torpedoed (though not during the Dash) and damaged heavily. After this, she was mainly used as a training vessel until the midwar where she was used as a gunnery platform.
She eventually surrendered to the British, and was then given to the USA as a war prize, and was redesignated to USS Prinz Eugen (IX-300), and was used in Operation Crossroads, where she was nuked twice. She eventually capisized and she still sits in Kwajelein Atoll to this very day, rusting away.
