Description

The F-16 XL had a troubled history. Developed from General Dynamik’s highly successful line of novelty explosion-carrying devices, the F-16 XL is an experimental attempt to satisfy customer demands to do everything the F-16 does, but faster. At the drawing board, their engineers realized something that would seem obvious in hindsight: the F-16’s wings are too small to go fast and turn fast; in their haste to replace them with larger ones, they forgot about the tail. Talking it up as a simplicity feature, they were expecting it to sell like hotcakes. Unfortunately, its sleek design and high performance were insufficient at the market, where it was pointed out that they weren’t cheaper than Solid Rocket Boosters.
