X-86 Titanus Lander
Built to conquer the planet Titanus from the New Horizons Planet pack, the X-86 Titanus lander will do its job.
Titanus is a hard place to get to. With a gravity of 2.4g and a pressure of 16 atm, it is a frozen super earth.
The atmosphere reaches up to 160km, but contains oxygen.
This enables us to built a Descent / Ascent vehicle with airbreathing engines on the first stage.
The X-86 Titanus is composed of four sections:
- Deorbit section: Two inflatable heatshields wil allow for reentry and slowing down to subsonic speeds.
- Rapier section: Rapier is used for landing and for take off again. It will work up to around 70km. The rapier section has oxidiser as well, for a further boost beyond 70km.
- Vector stage
- Terrier stage: The final stage with drone core and pilot.

Board the command seat with a Kerbal on EVA. You can board the seat through the fairing.
Deorbit the lander with your main craft.
Deploy both heat shields and remain retrograde, so that no reentry heat will reach the lander.
Once the velocity is low enough, jettison the heat shields. Take care not to damage the lander during the process.
Due to Titanus' dense atmosphere, unpowered landings are easily possible.
Collect science data and store experiment results in the drone core.
Remember, Titanus' atmosphere has a high density. In order to minimize delta V loss due to drag, you want to leave the atmosphere quickly.
Take off with the Rapier.
Align the ship with your main craft (usually 90 degrees, if it is in orbit with zero inclination).
Accelerate and climb. As you gain speed, pitch up. You want to gain speed and a high climb rate, but not desintegrate because of overheating.
The idea is to shoot your craft as high as possible with rapier only.
Flame-out occurs at about 70km above sea level. Switch Rapier mode. When the first stage oxidiser is used up, launch the econd stage.
This will jettison the fairing, detach the Rapier / wing section and activate the Vector.
Climb prograde and gain speed.
Third and final stage is powered by a Terrier engine. Climb, until your apoapsis is above 160km, then circularize at apoapsis.
Also transportable with the Endymion series long range SSTO.
