Description
Wanna breach atmo before you even drop the SRBs? Look no further.
A mod rocket called Colossal Arse Lander MKII. Built with 672 of the finest parts, its root part is mk1-3pod.
Needs MechJeb 2.
You can launch it with just the SRBs (zero throttle on launch stage engines) and have them run out of fuel around 71000M, then use the launch stage engines to circularize or do some other maneuver to leave Kerbin’s SOI; or you can launch with full throttle, drop SRBs when they run out of fuel somewhere around 83000M and already have a trajectory that leaves. Whatever suits your mission best.
This thing (with the bottom still attached w/ fuel in it) takes a LONG time to turn w/o RCS, but RCS destroys any chance of a precise maneuver if you are trying to visit another planet. Use SAS to turn towards your maneuver, and just use physics warp to make it do so at a reasonable IRL speed.
Normally, there would be 4 small SRBs on the lander to take back off from like Duna or something, but I dont have them on this version. You can add them yourself really easy tho. :)
As a side note; expect a bad framerate when launching this thing. It gets better once you are out of atmo and the SRBs drop but thats KSP, yo.
