While solar eclipses happen rather frequently here on Kerbin, for some reason our engingeers got really excited about the one we had on August 21st. They jumped up and down and pleaded until we let them build a special aircraft to do lots of sciencey stuff.
What we got is a pretty decent plane, shockingly. It can cruise at Mach 2.5 for over an hour with droptanks, handles well, and easy to take off land. The crew cabins hold two pilots and four passengers.
The engineers repurposed one of our infrared telescopes to stare at the sun instead. They assure us that the cardboard filters they ordered online would protect the expensive optics. At least, that’s what the website said, anyway. We tested them out by having some interns stare at the sun for a few hours. Amazingly, they could all see just fine afterwards. We can’t say the same for the control group, though.
Lev Aerospace - Doing awesome things for science, no matter how many unpaid interns go blind.
Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.3.0.
When first uploaded, I accidentally used a part from SXT. I corrected that, but I’m not sure if there were any side effects from changing it.
