About the Black Brant XII
The Black Brant XII is the last and most powerful of the Black Brant family of Canadian designed solid rocket sounding rockets. Sounding rockets are suborbital rockets designed to gather information and to perform experiments in space. For example, the first uses for the Brant, in the 1960’s, was to observe the upper atmosphere as part of ongoing research into anti-ballistic missile systems and long-range communication. These rockets proved to be extremely reliable making it a popular choice of sounding rockets for space agencies around the world. Over 800 Black Brants have flown. They are now regarded as one of the best of its kind.

The rocket is composed of quite a few stages! The first stage booster (white), named Talos, the second stage (red), called Terrier. On top of that, is the Black Brant V with a Nihka fourth stage.
A crazy thing happened with this rocket in 1995. After a Black Brant XII launched in Norway, the Russian nuclear forces were put on high alert. The trajectory resembled that of a US missile. Thankfully, The Russian President decided not to launch a retaliatory nuclear strike against the United States. This is the only known incident where nuclear weapons were prepared for launching an attack!

About the Replica
Ok, ok! no more history… The thing you may have noticed the first, is the nice colorful paint scheme. This is achieved with flags, so you’ll need to download them if you want to try this out. This wasn’t the hard part though. The hard part was building it the size it is, 0.625m diameter! The fairing was especially tough.
For flight, I like to point it straight up with SAS Anti-Radial (out)
. This is a bit unrealistic to the real thing but it goes higher and is more stable, but you can try pitching when you’re a little ways up. Also, make sure to stage as soon as possible if not you’ll slow down significantly without thrust because of the drag induced by the flags. And don’t be alarmed if the fairing separation shakes you up a bit! You can expect to get above
65000 m if you go vertically.

Hope you enjoy!
