-Basic Description

WEW BOI, where to start? This is one of the most ambitious projects I have ever undertaken. I actually wasn’t going to post this originally, however considering that I spent nearly 50 Hours on the dang thing I simply wasn’t going to let it fade into the evergrowing annals of my VAB craft list. I have never seen anyone do a quadruple Minmus rocket before so I took a crack at it. This rocket uses entirely traditional rocket engines, so no jets, nuclear, or ion engines involved. The kerbal is in a external command seat, and Embarks onto the rocket from a Mk1 Command Pod which Is subsequentally dettached. The rocket is divided into 4 Blocks which each represent a full Minmus Mission. Due to the nature of this craft you cannot plant 4 flags on Minmus. However, you could probably keep Command Pod attached and just drop it onto the surface of Minmus Hazardish style. But this mission took me over 5 hurs to fly all the way through anyway, so I would rather die than attempt that. This rocket also uses a 135 kilogram rescue glider with a built in heatshield, which is the lightest way of landing a kerbal back on Kerbin that I know of.

-How to Fly

During each launch, fly directly into an orbit with your inclination already matched to that of Minmus. Make sure any and all maneuvers are as efficient as possible, and are executed as efficiently as possible (I would highly recommend Kerbal Engineer Redux and Precise Node). When landing on Minmus, Try to land in the highlands to minimize the Delta-V expenditure. When landing back at kerbin, try to land as close to the equator as possible (I recommend the Trajectories mod). Rinse and repeat until you’ve done it 4 times. The final rescue glider does thermally protect the Kerbal, however heat transfer between parts can still kill them, so be gentle on your final aerobrakes.

-Current Issues

1: Having flown this craft myself I can assure you that this mission is possible, howver the Delta-V margins are very slim. So if you are unable to successfully do the mission, it is pilot error. Though it is true that some Blocks have slimmer margins of error than others, so If a specific Block is expended, but you haven’t completed your Minmus escape burn, feel free to use a bit of the next Block as the mission may still be salvagable.
