Description

Built under secrecy, the XF5U was a unorthodox design. Mostly a disk-shaped aircraft, the design was to create a low aspect ratio wing with capabilities of low landing speeds and high top speed overall. The design’s shape produced large amounts of parasitic induced drag at the tips, which was resolved by moving the props as far outward as possible. The design was supposed to be used for carrier operations for it’s lack of width, however the project was cancelled. Testing the aircraft was an interesting situation as bystanders who ultimately saw the aircraft crash on a beach though it was a UFO. Those who worked on the project nicknamed it the Flapjack, because of it’s round shape.
