The Juno I was a rocket developed in the early days of the space race after Sputnik 1’s launch, derived from the Jupiter-C rockets used for reentry testing, the only real addition was upgraded avionics and an additional 4th stage, this allowed the Juno I to launch a satellite weighting 11 kilograms into a low earth orbit.
originally proposed for Project Orbiter, which was a proposal by the US Army and Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) to launch a earth orbiting satellite for the IGY of 1957 - 58, the proposal was denied by the Eisenhower administration but later excepted as a backup option incase Vanguard failed, which it did.
After the failure of Vanguard TV-3 in December 1957, Project Orbiter was approved, and after was later transformed into project Explorer, with the science payload being provided by Dr. James Van Allen.
Juno I’s first launch was on the 1st of February 1958, the launch was America’s first successful satellite launch, it would go on to launch 5 more times after that with 2 launches succeeding, the last launch in October of the same year used a 5 stage variant of the rocket, the payload was the Beacon satellite for the U.S. Army, which was a inflatable satellite what would have been used to see if people could visually track a satellite in its orbit, unfortunately
the launch failed, and the rocket was retired in favor of its replacement, the Juno II.
I built this rocket for use in the new RP-1 update P&LC, apologies it has been a while since my last craft post, but i got lots of new stuff coming, Vanguard will be next in this series of U.S. rockets, so stay tuned for that!
