Description

The Emergency Response Aircraft designation was assigned to a short-ranged but fast interceptor, purpose-built for defensive strikes on incoming nuclear threats.

Unveiled in 1963, the ERA-Mk1 is notable for both its ability to rapidly accelerate up to combat speeds, and for its exceptional climb rate in response to threats. These factors ensure it can go from standing still to 10000m in under two minutes, at a climb angle of 30 degrees. Its combat record in mock ‘missile interceptions’ has earned it the nickname ‘Try Again Another Day’ from pilots. Armament includes a heavy machine-gun mounted directly beneath the nose, and four attachment points for guided or unguided missiles.
