DO NOT USE THIS ROCKET!
It was supposed to boost a drop probe into orbit to test the probe’s de-orbit motor, heat shield, and parachutes. However, due to the fins for stabilizing the probe and some bug with FAR’s recognition of which parts are shrouded and which are not, this rocket has a very bad static margin – look at how far forward the CL is! I never got this rocket into orbit, even with the big SAS module attached right below the shroud.
When I did get the probe into orbit (with a different rocket), it turned out to not be that great anyway – it is based on a backbone of (physicsless) cubic octagonal struts, which shook the probe to bits (literally disintegrated it) when the de-orbit motor fired.
As far as I can tell, the only only thing this rocket is good for is to help ferram4 debug his mod. (If you think I’m being too hard on it, please let me know what redeeming factors you see in it in the comments.)
Description
For getting that little bit of data that much earlier. Also possibly useful for establishing low-orbit planetary communication networks for low cost (3 KF per unit).
A mod rocket called Atmospheric Drop Probe Test. Built with 41 of the finest parts, its root part is probeCoreOcto2.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 0.25.0.
