Description
The Multipurpose Aerospace Transportation System is a versatile launch system that includes a pair of liquid fueled boosters, a core stage with a rocket engine and a sleek-looking orbiter that doesn’t seem to go with the rest of the rocket.
It can be used for a variety of tasks, from servicing space stations to deploying and recovering small satillites from orbit.
The MATS was conceived as a cheap, versatile system to transport small cargo and passengers to orbit and provide a transport for space stations, however; it was not used frequently due to its small capacity for crew and cargo and the complexity of a spaceplane that could land itself ‘not being necessary’.
A stock rocket called MATS. Built with 94 of the last parts available before KSP 2 came out, its root part is mk2Cockpit.Standard.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.12.5.
Instructions:
This is a difficult craft to fly during ascent, like most asymmetrical shuttle-based craft.
Throttle up quickly when launched and press 3 to toggle the control point to the launch position. Pitch down slowly during ascent.
You will have to constantly pitch the craft up during ascent, especially after booster jettison.
At around 50 km, press 4 to shutdown the Vector engine and put the control point back to normal. The craft will pitch less following Vector shutdown.
Stage to jettison the core. The core is capable of deorbiting itself and recovery. Press 5 to prepare the core for deorbit, point it in retrograde and burn for several seconds.
During descent, stage again to activate the parachutes.
The MATS has a high lift-drag ratio and is easy to land on a runway by using its jet engines. Press 0 to engage them following atmospheric reentry.
