Description

The Mars Direct plan is the gold standard of near term mars mission architecture. In 1990 Robert Zubrin and David Baker designed this mission to prove the feasability of a mission to Mars by the year 2000 using off the shelf parts and in situ resources for refueling. Their plan uses two heavy lift SLS style boosters, one for the habitat and one for this earth return vehicle, which is sent unmanned and lands near the habitat. Robert Zubrin founded the Mars Society, a space advocacy group that champions fast, purpose driven, space programs with minimal waste in spending or costly delays that lead to program cancellations.
