Kawasaki Ki-61-I-Hei Hien

Description

The Ki-61 was introduced in 1942 by Kawasaki as a land based fighter aircraft for the Imperial Japanese Air Force. It was the only mass-produced fighter of the war with liquid cooled inline engine for the Japanese. The allied initially thought it was a Bf 109 or a C.202 due to it’s similar appearance. It was rushed into action, which led to problems with the reliability. The allied had gained the upper hand in air combat, but the Hien still proved to be a threat to the allied, being able to catch up to other fighters and outclassing the P-40 complitely.

The Ki-61-I-hei was nearly identical to the Ki-61-I-Otsu variant, but fitted with german wing mounted guns.

Another nice and quick build with reasonable part count from me, this seems to have become a trend! It was very similar build compared to my Bf 109 which I quite enjoyed. Added some nice little features including drop tanks, flaps that actually do a great job at slowing the plane down and one of my better custom landing gear to date, they can take on some harsher landings too!

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.10.1.

Controls

  • Throttle adjusts prop pitch. On takeoff, start with about 1/3 throttle, throttle up to 2/3 when you start nearing 30m/s and full throttle should be reached when you get to the max speed of about 80m/s
  • Flaps deploy from 1
  • Drop tanks drop from staging. Note that they don’t have a function and are purely visual
