Johnny is an interplanetary luxuary yacht with landing and SSTO capability on bodies up to the size of Duna.
Flown by an AI computer, it is designed to carry 6 passengers and provide top-class interplanetary travel experience.
Rumoured to be owned by a mysterious British collector, Johnny is a highly advanced spacecraft yet features a retro-style rocketship form, which clearly salutes the Consul’s Ship in Dan Simmons’ Hyperion Cantos.
The name is thus believed to be referring to the English poet John Keats (1795-1821)*.
Its special part is a large multifunctional saloon, which is considered particularly luxurious on a ship carrying only 6.
The ship can rotate around its center to provide minor artificial gravity that gives the feeling of up
and down
.
Apart from its leisure purpose, even complicated science experiments can be conducted thanks to its top-grade on-board sensoric.**
However, it lacks EVA or roving vehicles that could have been stored in this bay.
Technically viewed, Johnny has more than 6100dV*** plus drilling and ISRU equipments, thus theoritically allows unlimited travels within the Kerbol system, given the fact that there are always small moons or refueling stations around major tourist attractions.
Besides efficient nuclear engines, Johnny also has powerful aerospikes and thrust vector control (TVC) engines, thus it is able to land on small bodies up to the size of Duna****, gets refueled, and SSTO back again.
During refueling, it can serve as a very cozy residence even in most remote areas, and act as a large jumping rover itself. This is a major advantage compared to other interplanetary yachts that are unable to land.
Johnny is registered at Mun Surface Space Port Bodensee
, currently chartered and cruising between Mun and Duna.
Notes
*This is further supported by the fact that its launch date, 31.Oct, is exactly the birthday of the said poet.
**Yes, it can be used as a science craft. Only the large surface scanner is not aboard.
***In-hangar stats is lower than that, because a small amount of fuel is stored as ore. This can be converted into LH or LOX en-route. I tried to be reasonable with its interior spaces and did my best to avoid clipped-in tanks. Fuel supply priority is edited in order to keep CoM as low as possible.
****When landing on bodies with atmosphere, be very careful if you want to do aerobrake - It tends to flip over
to prograde due to tail fin-stablized aerodynamic form. Therefore, aerobrake is only useful if AP is still high up, but very dangerous if it flies too low and too fast - it will become an orbit missile and rush right into the ground. Better aim for retrograde and maintain, fire engines and use chutes to slow down (Let someone repack the chutes in the saloon). Dan Simmons is responsible for such a design.
This is my first upload here :D
Look forward to your feedbacks! Happy landings!
