This is part of Echo ‘47, a collection of semi-fictional designs set in the dawn of the jet age. Craft may be named after their real world inspirations, but they are not meant to be replicas.
Flight Instructions (!)
Follow to not lose propellers. See video for presentation.
MouseAimFlight mod is highly recommended.
Takeoff:
Set throttle to 1/3, pull up as soon as tail wheel leaves the runway. Vr is about 40m/s.
Flight:
Set throttle according to airspeed, like shown in the picture. 2/3 is good for most of the time. Max speed is ~220m/s @ ~6km altitude. This craft is powered by 16 RTGs and has an infinite range.
Landing:
Throttle down to maintain 40-50m/s airspeed. Achieve level flight as near the runway as possible, then throttle down to zero. Pull up (flare) as it floats down while losing speed (stalling) so that it sits on all 3 wheels. Brake or wait for a full stop. A normal
landing without the flare will result in the propellers colliding with the ground - this is also the case with the real life design.
Design Notes
- Yes, it’s based on the Vought XF5U
Flying Flapjack
and V-173Flying Pancake
, but in my settings it’s a heavily armed ground attack aircraft instead of fighter. It can pull 10G maneuvers, but has a crappy roll rate that I don’t know how to fix. I think the reason is the narrow wingspan (=small roll torque) and relatively heavy weight towards the wingtips (=large inertia). Generally I’m happy with its flight performance as fast bomber/attacker or perhaps night fighter, but I don’t think it’s suitable for daytime dogfight. Not sure about how the real design would behave. - This is my first time to mess around with KAL-1000 (for blade pitch and engine condition). It took quite some time, but I’m satisfied with the result.
Wish you enjoy and happy landings!
