Album contains 22 pictures. Craft comes with booster.

V1.1: Reduced KS-25 gimble limit to 15% to reduce oversteer. Other minor adjustments.

ESN-46 Freude is an advanced self-sufficient surface-orbit-surface shuttle vessel for celestial bodies up to the size of Duna. It’s named after the song Ode an die Freude (Ode to Joy), upon which the Anthem of Europe is based.

Key Features

  • Fly with style!
  • 4000-5000m/s vacuum dV (typical), high tolerance operation.
  • Self-sufficient with ISRU equipment and 12 RTGs alone.
  • Backup solar panels and fuel cells for additional operation safety, or as alternative when RTGs aren’t available.
  • Reliable SSTO booster sends the vessel into LKO with full tanks.
  • Perfectly aligned CoT and CoM (0.00kNm thrust torque).

Design Notes

  • The booster was designed with reusability in mind, but I’m currently too lazy for that, so it’s expendable for now. Modify and recover it if you want.
  • Replacing the 6 KS-25s on the booster with 4 Mainsails would do the job with far less cost, but since I’m using TWELVE RTGs as power source, cost saving is obviously not in my consideration.
  • My other ships with similar role: ESN-42 Johnny II, ES-44 Friede. Check these pages for detailed mission instructions if you’re not familiar with this type of craft (surface-orbit-surface shuttle).

Wish you enjoy, and Friede, Freude, Eierkuchen.
