A proof-of-concept small selfie drone quadcopter. The idea is inspired by the proposed Dragonfly mission to Titan, and to some degree by this craft. However this prototype is not directly designed for interplanetary missions.
I/K controls motor power.
AG1=horizontal control point
AG2=vertical control point (lock radial-in to hover, note that pitch control is reverted)
AG8=conduct experiments
Key Features
- Flight time: limitless (8min continuous + 3min recharge by RTG)
- Stable cruise speed: 14m/s (with -10deg pitch and max rotor power)
- Climb rate: 2m/s (maximum 4m/s: see Design Notes)
- Carries full set of repeatable science instruments
Design Notes
- This craft is optimized for horizontal cruise flight. For sake of this, the frontal rotor pair has a limited rotation rate of 315/360.
- You can set it back to 360/360 in-flight, so that it hovers better with a smaller tendency to fly forward, and its climb rate increases to 4m/s. But it will tend to pitch up in horizontal flight. I learned some important stuff about real rotorcraft from this phenomenon.
- This craft is fun to fly on Kerbin, but doesn’t work on Duna due to the low atmosphere density, not even with 4 blades on each rotor. Not tested on Eve and Laythe.
Wish you enjoy and happy taking selfies!
