Description

A simple shuttle craft that can get between the Kerbin and Duna surface. It has 1200 m/s left over in LKO, and 1000 m/s left in an 80 km Duna orbit. It also has mining equipment for refueling.

To fly to Duna

  1. Activate Rapiers with AG 1
  2. Take off and set a 10 degree pitch with SAS on
  3. Craft will accelerate through 20 km
  4. Once speed starts dropping, switch rapier mode with AG 2
  5. Once in space, use drain valves located just in front of the convert-o-tron at the top of the aircraft, to drain excess liquid fuel.
  6. Circularize
  7. Set up Duna encounter, modify maneuver nodes for aerobraking at Duna. Mechjeb is recommended

Landing at Duna

  1. Pitch appropriately during reentry to avoid overheating
  2. For parachute landing: Open cargo bay and deploy parachutes. Depending on exact altitude, small thrusts may be required from RCS or vertical thrusters to ensure safe landing. Use fuel drain valves, located just in front of the convert-o-tron at the top of the aircraft, to drain all fuel and minimize weight.
  3. For Thruster landing: Reserve a few hundred units of fuel to ensure you don’t run out
  4. Use AG 3 to open vertical thruster bays
  5. Turn off Rapiers with AG 1 and activate vertical thrusters with AG 4
  6. Adjust pitch and thrust to slow down and hover just above Duna surface. Using Vernor thrusters may be required to maintain control, depending on fuel load. Activate Vernors with AG 5

Refueling

  1. Open rear cargo bay, extend drills, and begin drilling
  2. Open front cargo bay and deploy Thermal Control System
  3. Press AG 6 to toggle fuel cells
  4. Start LF+Ox conversion with convert-o-tron. Remember, excess liquid fuel is not required when launching from Duna. When launching from Kerbin, fill the first 3 wings per side with LF.
  5. Also fill monoprop as desired

Departing Duna

  1. Retract mining and cooling equipment, and use AG 6 to toggle fuel cells off.
  2. Toggle Vernors on with AG 5, and activate RCS.
  3. Use AG 1 to turn on Rapiers, and AG 4 for vertical thrusters. Throttle up.
  4. Craft should lift off at around 40 m/s. Turn off vertical thrusters, close thruster bays, and deactivate Vernors and RCS
  5. With SAS on, set pitch to 15 degrees. Hold this pitch throughout most of the ascent.
  6. Once Ap is approaching space, gradually pitch down to level.
  7. Circularize
