LVPK (Russia)

Description

The “Iguana” is Woomerang Design Bureau’s solution for landing Kerbals on Munar surface. Due to the requirement to launch the lander on a 7-stack Ladle YiWCC, “Iguana” is designed for maximum compactness. Still, it can takes 4 Kerbalnauts to Munar surface, along with a total of six cargo slots for ground-deployable experiments.
In order for the lander to reach beyond equatorial regions, it was launched with the “BD-0” upper stage that provide necessary orbit changes and transition.

Flight profile:

  • Launch lander into Munar Orbit ahead of Kerbal-containing capsule.
  • Adjust inclination with BD-0

Real-Life/Maker Notes

The LVPK Lunar lander is a planned lander from Roscosmos. While there is only one English article from RussiaSpaceWeb (and a bunch from NASA Space Flight forum), there does actually exist enough Russia presentations that I consider it exist.

Unfortunately, the only concrete infos are: it carries 2~4 people initially, cylinder in shape (both horizontal and vertical), and originally planned to be launched on Angara-7 before deciding upon a 5-stack Sunkar (Soyuz-5) launch vehicle. Its overall design will be similar to the LK-lander, being a 2-stage lander with a Blok-DM based crasher stage. Once the Blok-DM eliminate the horizontal speed, the lander detach from it and conduct landing operations using its main thruster. When ascending, it will discard the landing stage with the lower fuel tanks and fire the same landing thrusters.

Based upon this, I decided to size it for my Angara clone and make its diameter as small as possible. The rest of the design are just very good guesses – whether they are going to use a lunar spacestation, or the lunar-lunar rendezvous is unknown. For testing purpose, it was launched from the Dessert Launchpad (7 degree incline), so upon entering Munar orbit, the lander is at approximately 55 degree incline around Mun, before I moved it to the typical equatorial orbit, and dock it with a LyncBon Space Capsule that I also launched from Dessert LP to Mun for Munar Rendezvous.
