Replica of:

Soyuz Capsule and R7 launcher

Description

“Dongmeng” is second spacecraft series from Woomerang Design Bureau. Built upon lessons learned from the “Valentis”, the Dongmeng series is equipped with a large service module, fully functional RCS that allows orbital maneuver, and a disposable habitation capsule that allows Kerbalnauts to travel in comfort.

The SaX-type are equiped with LFO and LV-909 “Terrier” engine, which allows the Dongmeng to reach high altitude space stations, and even act as a Munar/Minmus transport.

Since Kerbalnauts want to save electricity so they can watch the livestream from SWXF League, the RL variant is developed; unlike the standard version, RL edition does not use the electricity-consuming reaction wheel, but rely entirely on RCS control for orientation.

To launch the Dongmeng SaX, Woomerang Design Bureau enhanced the Ladle launch system in order to launch the heavier spacecraft. Changes include slightly lengthening of the core stage, and a new second stage powered by an efficent LV-T91 Cheetah engine

Other notes

Most people already know about the history of the spacecraft. The basic gist is that the Soyuz was originally the lunar transport designed by Korolev Design Bureau as part of the N1 project, before being modified for the purpose of ferrying astronauts to Salyuts, and later, Mir and ISS.

To illustrate it is actually capable, I conducted a test to my Rangong station which is situated at 250k orbit, as shown in the screenshot. This prove that Dongmeng can actually reach such a high attitude and rendezvous with the spacestation with DeltaV to spare.

The RCS on the return capsule is a low-part-count approximation to the RCS system on the Soyuz Return module (used to prevent a ballistic entry). For those that want to full replicate it, it was 2 thrusters for yaw, near the fore-bottom, 2 for pitch, near fore-bottom, and either 2 or 4 for roll, near the top.
