Description

FULLY AUTOMATED MUN MISSION! 100% STOCK! WOW!

How to use:
1) Startup KSP with default/stock settings
2) Create a sandbox scenario with default difficulty settings
3) Quicksave
4) Deploy the vehicle on the KSC Launchpad
5) Time warp to Y01 D01 23:09:00
6) Set the throttle to 100%
7) Activate SAS (stability assist mode)
8) Hit the spacebar while the UT still says 23:09:36, but is just about to rollover to 23:09:37

The craft will then spend the next ~6 hours or so performing a Mun landing and return mission, completely autonomously.

Outbound trip: ~2 hours
Return trip: ~3.7 hours

The mission is timed and conducted with KAL controllers, so any use of time acceleration will stop the control sequence during the outbound trip. However, no KAL units are needed during the return trip, so feel free to skip that with time warp.

BE ADVISED:

The success of a run hinges entirely on the launch timing and launch vehicle performance. If launched too late, the craft will start its Mun landing burn too late and will crash. If launched too early, the craft will start its Mun landing burn too early and will run out of fuel before reaching the surface and will crash. The margin of error in timing the launch is somewhere on the order of 0.2 seconds.

My advice: fly this with the Trajectories Mod installed. The craft doesn’t need this mod to function, but the UI can let you see whether or not a run will be successful without having to wait two hours to find out.

If the projected impact longitude is around 21 deg or less, the launch was too late.
If the projected impact longitude is around 26 deg or higher, the launch was too early.

Munar EVA is not recommended. The throttle reverts to zero after re-entering the craft, so the return to Kerbin won’t happen (autonomously, anyway).

A stock rocket called Automun XVII. Built with 295 of the finest parts, its root part is kv1Pod.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.12.3.
