Description
1:gen 2:Dawn 0:gimbal
A stock mission vehicle called Scout. Built with 190 of the finest parts, its root part is dockingPortLarge.
This may just be my most ambitious opus so far!? It is also a replacement for my quite successful Long March. However, I realized I could do more, especially with the new Terrapin component. (Scout comes with a Zephyr launcher, pictured below.)
From left to right, this interplanetary vehicle payload contains:
- science lab
- 2x RA-2 comms relay pods: eBeep and pBeep; to place 3 relays each into the equatorial and polar orbits at your destination planet
- an RA-100 relay to go into a highly-eccentric polar orbit to spend the majority of its duty cycle above or below the ecliptic to facilitate communication with other bodies
- an M700 Survey Scanner, capable of scanning multiple bodies at your destination
- a Terrapin drive motor
NOTE for launch: do not stage away the Twin Boars when their stacks run dry, as you will need to establish a higher apoapsis before you can rely on the Rhino alone.
At arrival at the destination, one strategy is to enter a high equatorial orbit and deposit the lab and eBeep there for further deployment. Then use the Terrapin to drive pBeep, RA-100 relay and M700 survey scanner into a polar orbit. The Terrapin will have plenty of dV to shuttle the M700 to multiple locations. It can also rejoin the science lab and take it to a lower orbit for final deployment.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.7.3.
