Description

1:engines 2:panels 3:gimbals
version IIb with help from Lt_Duckweed

Kryptonite is an SSTO specifically built for Eve. It carries up to 7 kerbals. It is capable of ascending to LEO directly from a runway with elevation of 12 km.

Old Smokey Spaceport

With Kerbal Konstructs installed, add the Old Smokey spaceport found at the Kerbal Konstructs Airport Exchange.

Kryptonite (OLD) must be launched from this 12km elevation in order to reliably make LEO; it may easily return directly to Old Smokey or alternatively to the native terrain. Refueled on the surface near the base of Old Smokey, it easily ascends to the spaceport for further fuel. Fuel may be mined/refined on top of Old Smokey.

Ascent to LEO
  • For reference, OLD R9: Set Position: lat: -0.7606 lon:168.1730 alt:6 pitch:0 hdg:90
  • a/p settings (if in use): climb:40m/s hdg:90
  • gear up; engage a/p; allow acceleration until nose and prograde coincide; disengage a/p
  • then SAS Sfc Prograde but do not allow the nose higher than 15 deg (use SAS Hold)
  • reaching 1050 m/s, re-engage SAS Sfc Prograde and throttle back as necessary to stave off the Heat Bar Army
  • do not exceed 1400-1450 m/s until reaching 40km altitude
  • full throttle the moment the Heat Bar Army begins retreating
  • raise AP to 92 km and coast (SAS Sfc Prograde)
  • circularize (expect 3211 m/s for orbit)
  • await intercept from an LEO service vehicle [RCS is likely to be added in an ECO update]
Descent to the Eve surface
  • in preparation, refuel the two main S3 tanks: 9720 LF + commensurate OX
  • pin open all tanks and pump the 3240LF S3 tank down to 2290LF (70.68%); unpin this tank and close
  • pump the 6480LF out to all others leaving 4580; all 13 tanks should now have 70.68% fuel loads of LF/OX
  • if the landing target is Old Smokey, initiating de-orbit at lon:140.9 should work (27 deg ahead of target)
  • reduce Sfc speed to 2 km/s to initiate deorbit.
  • descending thru 70-75km reduce speed to 1200 m/s
  • reaching 50km, reduce speed to 800 m/s or less
  • flying retrograde (backwards), you should be able to bring the nose down (tail up) and carry some speed to your target
  • when within reach (and flying a little slower), turn SAS Sfc Prograde and flip-around to conduct normal flight
  • Kryptonite has no airbrakes so some good judgment in washing off airspeed will be required.
