Inspired by Sebastiaz’s brilliant take on the Hornet I’ve finally gathered the courage to take on the last fighter of the Teen Series. This finishes the F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18 quarter nicely.
The F/A-18C was a navalized development of the loser of the Light Fighter Programme - the YF-17 Cobra. While unfit for USAF requirements it proved to be an excellent platform for potential navalization and soon after the program was finished, the Navy showed interest in purchasing the airframe. The F/A-18C Hornet was a single seat variant of the legacy Hornet, fir for both ground strike missions and air-to-air combat. With a tailhook and reinforced landing gear it was fit for carrier operations, and it’s small size compared to it’s bigger brother - the Tomcat meant it could be operated off a single carrier in larger numbers.
The Hornet continues to prove it’s worth today as the backbone of the Navy, fulfilling both CAP and CAS duties whenever necessary, as well as SEAD, buddy-buddy refueling and in the case of the E/A-18G Growler variant - electronic warfare.
Widely used by NATO countries, the Hornet is sure to keep watching over the skies for decades to come.
