After going very big with my DC-10 it was time for something a little bit more compact, and so here it is.
The Skyhawk may not be the fastest, or the heaviest, or the highest flying, But it breaks all records in terms of the number of 172s produced. It is the most numerous aircraft in history. Designed in 1955, the Skyhawk quickly became popular with amateurs and aviation beginners due to it’s ease of handling, reliability and affordability. Over the years it was retrofitted with modern avionics and some parts like the vertical stabilizer were modernized to allow it to remain in service as a trainer for more modern airframes. With nearly 45 thousand Skyhawks produced, it is very likely some of these guys are sitting at an airfield near you, and if you ever choose to become a pilot it is very likely you will earn your wings behind the controls of a Skyhawk.
This replica’s performance is comparable to the real Skyhawk in terms of top speed, stall speed and climb rate. For a propeller aircraft it is also very gentle in terms of torque-induced roll and is quite stable so it might help you get familiar with all the quirks of propeller aircraft in KSP. It will take off at about 30m/s, will stall below 24m/s and max out at about 82m/s. It’s great for learning how to recover from stalls since you can easily induce them if you try!
Enjoy flying this little guy.
