Chang'e 5 (嫦娥五号)
Earlier today (as of the upload date Dec 16), China’s chang'e 5 Lunar sample return mission ended with the landing of the spacecraft on earth. The goal of the mission was, as the name suggests, to bring a sample of the lunar soil back to earth. Named after the
chinese moon goddess Chang'e (嫦娥),
this is the 6th mission of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP, 中国探月), and it is china’s first sample return mission and
Flight Profile
Like the real one, press stage to activate the main engines, throttle up and stage again to activate the booster engines. Never hit full throttle until booster separation. doing so will have the rocket go overspeed really quickly.
Start pitching at 800m, make a shallow ascent trajectory, going to 45° once you reach ~15km. from there, slowly start pitching past 45°. try to keep the TWR some where from 2 to 2.50. also, never pitch past the end of the prograde marker.
when your apoapsis reaches 45km, throttle up to max and wait for the fuel to burn out, and you apoapsis shoud be at ~50km. Then, separate the boosters
separate the fairing when you get to ~30km
get your apoapsis up to ~75km, and you should still have fuel left. cut the engine and coast up to ~70km and burn until you apoapsis hits 85km. then, start raising your periapsis. try not to accidently circularise with the core stage.
1st stage separation
reach orbit with the second stage
Plot your maneuver to the mun, and then execute the maneuver.
Chang'e 5 separation. then press 2 and then 4 to get into the cruise position you could also hit 5 to adjust the pitch of the solar panels
make sure your mun periapsis is at 65-70km, and timewarp to the mun and do the orbital insertion.
separate the orbiter and lander, and switch back to the orbiter and click the fairing on the staging icon, and press deploy. DON’T PRESS STAGE BEYOND THIS POINT
switch back to the lander and lower it’s periapsis down to 10km. then, press 9
at 15km, do your deorbit burn and stop the deorbit burn once you speed drops down to 50m/s. be as efficient with you fuel as possible.
start the landing burn at 2km above the surface, and then switch the altimeter from sea level to relitave land height. once at 3m above the surface, cut all throttle and let it fall to the surface. then, press 7, and then 8.
press 1 to deploy the sample arm. the KAL controller can do the rest of the work.
Make double sure that the orbit stage is passing overhead, and then press radial out (REALLY IMPORTANT) and then press stage to lift off. get into an orbit of 30km x 30km, and then press 3. (again, be as efficient with you fuel as possible.) then, do your rendezvous maneuver.
approach the orbit stage, switch to the orbital stage, and then press 5. then,
dock
. important once you’ve docked, click stability assist. Note that you can’t reallydock
, but the docking ports should attract each other. In other words, just pretend that you just docked. then, press stage twice to undock. Once undocked, switch to the orbit stage and perform your escape maneuver, with a kerbin periapsis of 30km. if your trajectory hits the water, perform a correction maneuver.reenter as you watch the orbit stage burn up. or, if you like realism and have principia installed, (I don’t) then, you could switch to the orbital stage and put it on a trajectory to L1. with the returner, coast down to 10km above the ground, and then press stage to deploy the drogue chute. then, coast down to 5km. press 0, and then press stage again to deploy the main chute. From there on out, let the capsule coast down to the surface.
was the first sample return mission since 1976. It consisted of an Orbiter, Lander, Ascender, and Reentry module. On Monday the 23 of November, It lifted off atop a Long March 5 rocket from china’s Wenchang Spaceport on Hainan Island in the south of mainland china. after ~5 days of cruising through space, it arrived at the moon and ired it’s engine to get into orbit around the moon. about a day later, the orbiter and lander separated, and the lander began it’s decent to the surface. On the 1st of December, it successfully landed in the Mons Rumker region in Oceanus Procellarum. after 2 days on the surface, the ascender lifted off and headed to orbit to dock with the orbiter, of which it did on the 5th of December. After it undocked, the orbiter and capsule were set to return to earth. It landed today, December the 16th, In the Siziwang Region in Inner Mongolia (内蒙古), in Northern China.
by the way, if there are any grammar mistakes, it’s probably because I am just generally bad at english (it has nothing to do with chinese-americans by the way)
2/13 update: The craft has been updated! The long march 5 rocket has pretty much been redesigned, apart from the layout of course. The boosters have been designed from the ground up, taking note of realism first. Better yet, the rocket is extremely powerful, and takes this up from barely capable of the mun up to reaching the mun with ~400 m/s of DeltaV left. For realism sake, i’ve also added a bunch of flags to make the markings. The old boosters were extremely underpowered, too small, and had a high part count. because of the much simpler 2.5m boosters that don’t need 48 swivel engines clipped together, the part count has been reduced by a little. I’ve also covered up the roll patterns with fairings, just to make that icing on the cake. I hope you like it!

v.2.0
In this album, hopefully you can see most of what’s improved. also, now I’ve fixed a control issue, so you now pitch with WS instead of AD.
