Description
A mod rocket called Communotron 16 CommSat + Launcher. Built with 144 of the finest parts, its root part is probeCoreHex.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.1.3.
A fairly basic RemoteTech communications satellite with launcher. This sat is sufficient for creating a medium range omni network at Kerbin, plus with capacity to relay to Mun/Minmus/anywhere in Kerbin SOI.
The launcher has sufficient dV to insert the sat into Minmus or Mun orbits, even highly elliptical orbits to minimize eclipsing and signal loss.
I’ve had a lot of fun with this ship and have a four satellite comms network over Kerbin composed of these. I’ve also added a couple science modules and used the exact same ship to complete SCANSat missions around Mun and Minmus, and I have also used the craft as the core of an unmanned Minmus Lander
which I’ve successfully tested in Kerbal Construction Time’s simulation mode,
and will soon test for real.
I will likely use the same core (with a bit more EC storage capacity and a bit more hydrazine and perhaps some ion engines) as the basis for my initial interplanetary probes once I unlock more powerful communications dishes.
