Description
This JOol Near-polar Orbiter is my attempt at a stock KSP replica of NASA’s Juno spacecraft currently orbiting planet Jupiter. It launches atop an Atlas V in its 551 configuration just as the real on did.
Note that this Craft doesn’t posses enough Delta-V to reach Jool directly, so a gravity assist is needed in order to make it all the way. I tested this successfully with a Kerbin-flyby, again just like the real spacecraft. Here’s a short tutorial on how to do that:
In my tests the best transfer window opens right after any regular Jool transfer window.
The first one being roughly around 230 days into the game. After reaching a stable parking orbit use the remaining fuel of the upper stage to propel yourself high up over Kerbol, somewhere between Duna’s and Dres’ orbits. Your aphelion should be about 1 year and 20 days away.
Once you reach this aphelion it should be just above one year into the flight. There, burn retrograde until you re-encounter Kerbin. Swing by Kerbin and let its gravity swing you right toward Jool.
the rest should be interplanetary travel 101. If you did well, the last drops of fuel in the space probe should be enough to enter a highly elliptical Jool orbit.
In case this craft is too restive for your liking, ParmeetRuprah made a version that should be easier to handle. https://kerbalx.com/ParmeetRuprah/Juno
Have fun and fly safe!
P.S. I stole the idea for those foldable solar panels from the YouTube channel Gamplay Review UK. [https://www.youtube.com/user/GameplayReviewUK]
Without those this craft wouldn’t have existed, so thank you!
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.4.2.
